Premier Doug Ford Calls Out the Waterloo Region for Mishandling the Wilmot Land Acquisition

Members of the Fight for Farmland Group, alongside concerned Wilmot community members, attended the 105th International Plowing Match (IPM) in Lindsay, Ontario, where Premier Doug Ford shifted blame onto the Region of Waterloo for the mishandling of the Wilmot Land Assembly and its farmland acquisition.

IN THE NEWS

In an attempt to finally get answers and bring transparency to the controversial 770-acre industrial mega-site being forced in Wilmot Township and inform the community of its significant implications, the Fight for Farmland Group filed 21 basic Freedom of Information Requests with the Region of Waterloo, 18 of which were denied entirely, and the remaining 3 answered with “no record” nor information.

Region of Waterloo Shreds Spectacular Corn Crop and Taxpayer Dollars in Wanton Destruction of Agricultural Land in Wilmot Township

The Waterloo Federation of Agriculture estimates that the Region squandered a significant amount of revenue by destroying this crop. Corn valued at approximately $5.00 per bushel, with an average yield of 200 bushels per acre on this prime farmland, represents potential revenues of around $1,000 per acre. This totals a staggering $160,000 in lost revenue, for which the landowner must be compensated by the Region, not to mention the additional cost incurred for crop destruction services. To put this into perspective, this field could have produced 2.5 million boxes of 400g Corn Flakes cereal.

WE ARE UNWILLING HOSTS

APRIL 24 - Region of Waterloo Council Meeting

We aimed to have several delegations share their stories and advocate for concerned citizens of Wilmot at the recent Region of Waterloo Council meeting. Despite our initial attempt to delegate in advance, our efforts were rebuffed. Nonetheless, a group of 14 of us attended the meeting to demonstrate our concern. Fortunately, student delegates addressing a different issue showed solidarity by advocating for our right to speak, leading to a motion by Mayor Salonen allowing Adam to make a presentation. Adam and Arjo van Bergeijk delivered a sincere presentation during the meeting.
